Why you should use a human graphic designer

Call me bias, but it’s still far better to engage your own human graphic designer rather than use an AI tool. It may seem a good idea to jump on the wagon and use AI for graphic design but there’s a number of good reasons why to still use a human.  Here’s 7 reasons we think you should still use a human graphic designer.

1. Strategic Thinking & Brand Alignment

  • Humans understand context and nuance. A designer can interpret a brand’s mission, target audience, and market positioning in a way AI can’t yet.

  • AI tools follow prompts; designers ask questions. A human will push back, refine, and offer strategic alternatives that align better with business goals. In short a human is more likely to question a bad design brief whereas Ai tools don’t.

2. Creativity & Originality

  • AI relies on existing data—which often leads to derivative or “safe” designs.

  • Humans innovate. They can combine unrelated ideas, challenge visual trends, and craft novel concepts that make a brand stand out. Knowing there will typically be initial concepts that need to be refined a human designer can take risks of presenting more bold and daring creative concepts.

3. Communication & Collaboration

  • Designers communicate with stakeholders, explain decisions, and incorporate feedback iteratively. They’ll get to know an organisation’s stakeholders, meaning they’ll know that Barry doesn’t like to see something particular in his designs. They also manage ambiguity, contradictions in client requests, and last-minute changes—situations where AI typically struggles.

4. Legal & Ethical Considerations

  • Copyright risks: AI may unknowingly generate images too similar to existing works.

  • Accountability: A human designer is responsible for their work and can ensure originality, which is important for trademarking and brand safety.

5. Emotional Intelligence

  • Design isn’t just about visuals; it’s about evoking the right emotions. Human designers understand cultural nuances, tone, and sentiment—critical for campaigns in diverse markets or sensitive topics.

6. Refinement and Craftsmanship

  • Humans understand layout, typography, colour theory, and spacing with finesse that AI hasn’t (yet) mastered. They know when to break the rules and when to follow them for maximum impact.

7. Long-Term Partnership

  • Businesses benefit from a long-term relationship with a designer who grows with the brand, understands its history, and anticipates its needs—something AI can’t replicate.
